Total Capital portfolio company Walkers Transport invests millions in Leeds logistics ‘superhub’ for growth

Walkers Transport, a portfolio company of Total Capital and a key member of the Palletways network, has announced a multi-million-pound investment in its Leeds-based Northern Hub. 

The project has consolidated operations from four smaller local sites into a single, enhanced logistics facility, signalling a strategic move towards greater efficiency and future growth.

The newly upgraded Northern Hub now integrates transport, operations, and storage functions within a significantly improved site. Key enhancements include the addition of a drive-through warehouse, specialised flooring solutions designed for high-volume pallet movement, and more accessible trailer loading areas. 

A primary focus of the project was to support the efficient handling of a substantial volume of goods, with the facility currently processing 5,000 pallet units per night and possessing the scalability to handle 8,000 units and beyond, as demand increases.

Chris Burley, Commercial Director at Walkers Transport, emphasised the strategic advantages of the new hub, stating: “Establishing this facility in Leeds offers a strategic advantage, with the location providing a competitive edge, and allowing us to contribute to improved cost efficiency across the Palletways network.”

Beyond infrastructure upgrades, Walkers Transport has implemented proprietary technologies and software solutions at the Northern Hub to further optimise operations and enhance service levels. These include ‘Walkers Climate,’ ‘Walkers Tetris,’ and ‘Walkers Insight,’ which, according to Burley, “have all been designed to improve the customer experience by allowing for real-time data analysis, improved resource management and streamlined logistics processes.”

Burley further highlighted the significance of the investment for the company’s future trajectory, adding: “This investment is indicative of our plans for future growth, and will help unlock greater operational and financial benefits for us and the broader network.”

The Northern Hub, strategically positioned to cover 20% of UK postcodes, is also projected to deliver significant sustainability benefits by reducing the average trucking distance per vehicle by an estimated 115 miles.
